Capes Sokol Announces Schwerin as New Shareholder
The law firm of Capes Sokol is pleased to announce that Michelle F. Schwerin has been elected a Shareholder of the firm.
“Michelle has been an important member of our tax controversy and litigation and white-collar defense teams since joining Capes Sokol in 2010,” said Sara G. Neill, Chair of the firm’s Tax Controversy and Litigation practice. “She is an excellent attorney, a C.P.A., and a leader in the St. Louis legal and accounting communities.”
Michelle represents individuals and businesses in civil tax examinations, appeals, and litigation, as well as criminal tax and other white collar criminal investigations and defense. She has successfully resolved numerous tax controversies on behalf of her clients including disputed tax liabilities and penalties, innocent spouse claims, preparer penalties, criminal investigations, and collection matters.
A respected author and lecturer, Michelle is often called upon to speak on various tax and white-collar matters in St. Louis and throughout the country. In addition, she is an adjunct professor at Webster University in St. Louis, where she teaches in the Masters of Forensic Accounting program at the Walker School of Business & Technology. Michelle is a leader in several professional organizations including the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and the Missouri Society of CPAs.
For her leadership and professional accomplishments, Michelle has received a variety of awards, including the Missouri Society of CPA’s 2017 Outstanding Young Professional Award and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis’ 2016 John C. Shepherd Professional Award. She has been included in The Best Lawyers in America® – St. Louis list for the area of Litigation and Controversy- Tax since 2017.
Michelle earned her juris doctorate, with honors, from Washington University School of Law in 2010 and her Bachelor of Science in Management in Finance and Accounting, with honors, from Tulane University in 2006. Outside of work, Michelle sits on the board of the Henry and Gladys Crown Center for Senior Living and is an active member of the Washington University Alumni Association.
