Capes Sokol is thrilled to announce the addition of attorney Scott B. Mueller as Counsel at the Firm. Scott brings a wealth of experience in real estate litigation, having built and managed a nationwide real estate litigation practice with exceptional success. Known for his strategic thinking and deep industry knowledge, Scott transitioned to an in-house counsel role at a leading global lender, where he honed his skills in leading teams, delivering unparalleled client service, and resolving intricate legal issues.

At Capes Sokol, Scott will represent developers, banks, mortgage lenders and servicers, construction companies and contractors, property owners, title insurance agents, and underwriters on a wide array of issues related to property ownership and real estate secured lending. His practice will involve addressing title insurance and title defects, resolving property ownership disputes, tax sales, condemnation, zoning and land use, fraud and foreclosure actions.  With thousands of real estate related cases and title insurance claims under his belt, Scott has consistently demonstrated a proven track record of success. 

“I am thrilled to return to private practice at Capes Sokol, which will allow me to build upon my prior experience, but also ‘stand on the shoulders’ of some true real estate giants,” said Mueller.  “I spent the last two years as in-house counsel learning the transactional and lending side of real estate and secured lending and I believe that experience will pay dividends to my clients on both sides of the transactional/litigation legal coin.” 

Scott’s commitment to community service is evident through his extensive volunteer work. From 2007 to 2019, he assisted indigent residents with estate planning through the St. Louis County Older Residents Program. Scott also served as a commissioner on the Webster Groves Plan Commission from 2014 to 2022 and continues to coach youth CYC Basketball in Webster Groves. 

Throughout his career, Scott has received numerous accolades, including being named to the Benchmark Litigation 40 and Under Hotlist (2019-2020), being awarded Largest Defense Verdict of 2012 by Missouri Lawyers Media, and earning the Martindale-Hubbell “AV” Distinction for Highest Professional Ability and Ethics. 

Scott holds a Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in History (with Honors) from Southern Illinois University. He is admitted to practice in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, and various U.S. District Courts. Scott also serves as an Associate Adjunct Professor for Real Estate Transactions at Saint Louis University School of Law and has chaired the ABA’s Title Insurance Litigation Committee.
