The law firm of Capes Sokol is pleased to announce that Sara G. Neill, Shareholder and Chair of Capes Sokol’s Tax Controversy and Litigation Practice Group, has been elected President of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (“BAMSL”).

BAMSL is a 145-year-old professional, voluntary bar association, with approximately 7,000 members.   It hosts over 300 events each year and engages in community projects such as Motion for Kids, St. Louis Attorneys Against Hunger, and an annual Mock Trial Competition.  Neill will be sworn in as the President on May 2, 2019, during the annual Law Day Celebration and Annual Meeting.

Neill has been actively involved in BAMSL for several years.  She previously served as Treasurer and Vice President, and currently serves as President-Elect.  Neill has chaired the Taxation Section, Bench and Bar Conference Committee, and Finance Committee, and has been an active participant in the St. Louis Attorney’s Against Hunger project.

In addition to BAMSL, Neill is involved in other legal organizations.  She routinely lectures at meetings of the American Bar Association’s Taxation Section, and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Sub-Committee on Important Criminal Developments for the Civil and Criminal Tax Penalties Committee. In 2016, she was elected to a five-year term to the Appointments to the Tax Court Committee, which is charged with reviewing the eligibility of United States Tax Court nominees and reappointments.

Neill recently joined the Board of Directors of The Bar Plan Mutual Insurance Company and currently serves as Secretary of the St. Louis Chapter of the Women in White Collar Criminal Defense Association.  She is a member of the St. Louis County Bar Association, St. Louis Women Lawyer’s Association, and the St. Louis Lawyer’s Association.

Neill is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a prestigious professional association reserved for an elite group of tax attorneys in recognition of their contributions to the field of tax law. In addition, she was recognized in both 2015 and 2018 as Best Lawyers’ St. Louis Tax Litigation and Controversy Lawyer of the Year.  Neill is listed in both Best Lawyers and Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers in the areas of tax and white-collar criminal defense.  She is an adjunct professor of law in Washington University Law School’s Tax LL.M. program where she co-teaches a course on Tax Fraud Prosecutions.
